April 24, 2023 – An orientation on government-funded Scholarship Programs from different government agencies and LGUs as part of the NIA Region VI Commitment for convergence initiatives for the Indigenous Peoples (IP) affected by the Panay River Basin Integrated Development Project (PRBIDP) was held at the Tapaz Municipal Training, Tapaz, Capiz.
As part of the Memorandum of Agreement for the Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) prior to the conduct of the Feasibility Study and Detailed Engineering Design (FSDE) of PRBIDP, four (4) IP barangays namely Aglinab, Mabini, Mali-ao, and Hilwan all within the municipality of Tapaz asked for scholarship assistance for their studying children.
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Health (DOH), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), as well as the Provincial Government of Capiz and the Municipal Government of Tapaz, presented their scholarship programs that may be availed by the IP communities
The NIA facilitated the event to act as the bridge between the IPs and NGAs and to assist the IPs in applying for scholarship programs for the college education of their children. The programs offered by the NGAs and LGUs vary depending on the courses offered that cover tuition fees, miscellaneous fees, monthly or semestral stipend/allowance including books and clothing, as well as board exam review and job search assistance.
The event was attended by Tapaz Municipal Mayor Hon. Roberto Palomar who encouraged the IPs to apply for the scholarships. He also emphasized the need for education to help alleviate poverty among the disadvantaged members of society.
The IP elders and representatives participated in the event and discussions. The NIA Region VI Team was led by Engineering and Operations Division Manager Robertino O. Lapeña.
