July 14, 2023 - As part of the Capacity Building for the Multipartite Monitoring Team (MMT) of Cabano SRIP (Cabano Sustainable Rural Infrastructure Program), team members along with the NIA VI Planning and Design (Environmental Unit) staff, recently visited the construction site of the Cabano SRIP dam in Brgy. Aguilar, San Lorenzo, Guimaras on the 2nd day of their Capacity Building Activity.

The purpose of the site visit was to assess the compliance of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) and its contractor with the provisions outlined in the Environmental Compliance Certificate issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB). The MMT members actively observed the construction activities and evaluated the adherence to environmental safeguards set by the regulatory authority.

During the visit, the MMT members had the opportunity to witness a water sampling demonstration, an essential aspect of their monitoring responsibilities. Monitoring and maintaining good water quality throughout the project's implementation is a crucial measure to ensure environmental preservation and sustainability.

The event saw the presence of Engr. Robertino O. Lapena, the NIA VI Division Manager for Engineering and Operations, who addressed the MMT members. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of dedication and vigilance in monitoring the environmental impacts brought about by the project's implementation. He urged the MMT members to promptly report any instances of environmental abuse to protect the local ecosystem.

The Capacity Building program aims to equip the MMT members with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively fulfill their roles as environmental watchdogs during the construction phase of the Cabano SRIP dam. Their active involvement ensures that the project proceeds in accordance with the prescribed environmental guidelines, safeguarding the surrounding community and ecosystems.

The site visit provided a valuable opportunity for the MMT members to witness firsthand the progress of the construction and engage with the responsible parties involved. Through their diligent monitoring and reporting, the MMT plays a crucial role in ensuring the Cabano SRIP dam project is implemented with environmental responsibility and sustainability at its core.
