NIA VI CONDUCTS ENHANCED MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF WATER FOR IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

In 2021, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) launched the Rehabilitation and Protection of Water Resources Supporting Irrigation System (R&P WRSIS) program in support of the DENR and NIA Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed on the 5th day of August 2019. The program aims to address issues and concerns of accelerated soil erosion in irrigation facilities, resulting in inefficient delivery of irrigation water supply to the service area. The program focuses on NIA’s right-of-way (i.e., reservoir, immediate upstream and downstream of dam site) and areas needed for rehabilitation under Alienable and Disposable (A & D) lands within the covered watershed. In Region 6, the pilot areas are the Barotac Viejo River Irrigation System and Sibalom San Jose Irrigation System.

A 5-day monitoring and evaluation activity was conducted to ensure that the identified interventions were efficiently implemented in the identified areas.

The team visited areas in Barangay General Luna, Del Pilar, Nueva Invencion, and Rizal in the Municipality of Barotac Viejo, Province of Iloilo, and Barangay San Rafael and Carawisan I in the Municipality of San Remigio, Province of Antique.

The activity was spearheaded by the Project Planning Division- Environmental Watershed Management Section of NIA CO, represented by Forester Abelardo H. Angadol Jr., Environmental Specialist A, and Mr. Jay B. Estrella, Environmental Specialist B.

The activity was participated in by the NIA Regional Office, Iloilo Guimaras Irrigation Management Office, and Antique Irrigation Management Office.
