
Barangay Aguilar, San Lorenzo, Guimaras - NIA Region VI conducts immediate response and action to a landslide incident in its project site. A landslide occurred in the location of the Cabano Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (SRIP) Office and Gatekeepers Quarters on July 9, 2024, at around 5:30 AM.
The NIA VI Acting Regional Manager, Engr. Jonel B. Borres immediately took action to mitigate the matter and to prevent further damage to the area. He personally conducted the inspection together with Engr. Cyril Sabete, Principal Engineer C of Materials Testing and Quality Control Section of Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project Stage 2 (JRMP2), and Engr. Paolo Jacson Retes, Consultant Geologist of JRMP2.


According to Engr. Joseph Digal, Resident Engineer of the CABANO SRIP, on the evening of July 8, 2024, heavy rain occurred in Barangay Aguilar, San Lorenzo, Guimaras around 6 PM until the dawn of July 9, 2024. In the morning around 5:30 AM, NIA personnel including Engr. Digal noticed the landslide that transpired in the area.
Engr. Borres immediately instructed the contractor to implement remedial measures. Currently, personnel in charge have drilled 3 boreholes to get soil samples to be analyzed by Engr. Retes. The gathered data will be used to ensure the length of the sheet piles to be utilized that will stabilize the ground.
Cabano SRIP is the biggest irrigation project in the Island Province of Guimaras, set to irrigate 861 hectares of farmlands and benefit 1,304 farmers. Seen as a gamechanger to the agricultural landscape of Guimaras, Cabano SRIP targets to be completed in 2025.
