In preparation for Wet Crop 2024, the NIA Antique Irrigation Management Office proactively conducted canal desilting activities in several barangays in San Remigio and Sibalom, Antique.
This initiative aimed to optimize water flow for the upcoming agricultural season. Also, this ensures that the effects of El Niño phenomenon can be mitigated by preventing water wastage. Desilting efforts were specifically carried out at Barangays Barangbang and Cadolonan in San Remigio, as well as Barangay Sido in Sibalom.
The implementation of these desilting activities was made possible through the utilization of newly-acquired heavy equipment units. This modern equipment facilitated the clearance of three hundred ninety meters of the canal at Extension 1 of the Sibalom-San Jose Irrigation System. This accomplishment underscores the commitment of the Antique IMO to enhance its services for local farmers.
NIA Administrator Engr. Eduardo Eddie G. Guillen emphasizes the need to proactively implement measures to lessen the negative effects of El Niño on agricultural production. Working hand-in-hand, the NIA and the IAs work tirelessly to secure water resources, especially with the dwindling supply brought by the progressively warming temperatures.

Engr. Bernard N. Castellano, Acting Division Manager of Antique IMO, emphasized the significance of these efforts, highlighting how the modern equipment has notably improved operational efficiency. His affirmation reflects the dedication of the organization to support agricultural productivity in the province.
Furthermore, during the recent System Management Committee Meeting held on February 14, 2024, canal desilting activities emerged as a pivotal agenda item. The discussion revolved around addressing the challenge of insufficient water supply, crucial for agricultural activities. In response, stakeholders reached a unanimous agreement. It was decided that various Irrigators Associations under the Sibalom-San Jose Irrigation System would cover the fuel costs for the heavy equipment used in these operations.
This collaborative effort signifies a strategic partnership between the Antique IMO and Irrigators Associations, aimed at ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of irrigation systems in the province. By sharing the financial burden of fuel costs, the stakeholders demonstrate their collective commitment to supporting farmers and optimizing agricultural productivity in Antique.
