
The National Irrigation Administration Regional Office VI led the Training of Trainers on Water Savings Technology (AWD), Pest and Nutrient Management For NIA O&M Personnel in PhilRice, Murcia, Negros Occidental on July 15-19, 2024.
The 5-day training was designed to equip NIA VI Operations and Management personnel with updated information and technologies on water saving, and pest and nutrient management which are vital in ensuring a more efficient water delivery system and increased agricultural productivity. Through the collaborative efforts of the NIA Region VI through Community Relations Chief B Ms. Joy A. Babiera and Principal Engineer C Engr. Andres Bonie O. Tuala, and DA PhilRice Negros, participants from the NIA Regional Office VI, Iloilo-Guimaras IMO, Aklan-Capiz IMO, Antique IMO, and Negros Occidental IMO engaged in various lectures, techniques, experiments, and field application facilitated by DA PhilRice Negros.



Among the topics discussed related to Water Savings Technology (AWD), and Pest and Nutrient Management were IPM Concepts and Principles, Insect Pest Identification and Management, Ecological Engineering, Weed Management Control, Rice Diseases and Management, INM Concepts and Principles, Minus-One Element Technique (MOET), Leaf Color Chart, Abonong Swak, Nutrient Management, Fertilizer Computation, Water Management, Alternate Wetting and Drying, and Water Saving Technologies.
After each discussion, participants were able to convey their understanding through detailed analyses, presentations, and actual fieldwork. Supervising Science Research Specialist and Business Development Coordinator Albert Christian S. Suñer, Gerald E. Bello, Ellie Zandrew Ganela, Cielo Luz C. Mondejar, Hermie A. Pajarillo, Frij Bimbao, and Research for Development (R4D) Coordinator Dr. Alvin D. Palanog were among the key personnel from DA PhilRice Negros who led the discussions.
Through the training, the NIA VI personnel are furnished with new knowledge that they will cascade to the farmers to boost their agricultural productivity and enhance their skills. With the full support of Acting Regional Manager, Engr. Jonel B. Borres, the NIA believes that consistent skill enhancement training will not only benefit the farmers of today but contribute to the nation’s food security.
